The first bridge was finished in 1812 and was
the longest covered wooden bridge ever built,
extending 5,960 feet on 28 piers. This colossus was
carried away by an ice jam in 1832. The second
bridge was burned July 1863 by the local militia to
prevent Confederate forces crossing the river. This
replacement was being constructed around 1876 time
frame and was destroyed by a severe windstorm in
1896.

The covered bridge idea was dropped after the
third one in the picture was destroyed, a concrete
and steel bridge built a few hundred yards
downstream, circa 1930 (bottom picture) the old
covered bridge piers can be seen, mostly tree
covered at this time. This bridge is still in
use.
