Though the architecture of Coit Tower is
reminiscent of that of a traditional light house,
it was in fact inspired by the fire nozzles used to
fight the fires of the 1906 earthquake; Coit Tower
is dedicated as a memorial to the firemen. To my
knowledge, Coit Tower has never had a Fresnel Lens
as is found in most traditional lighthouses.
Dedicated in 1933, Coit tower, located at the
summit of Telegraph Hill, does have a red aircraft
clearance light at it's highest point--this is NOT
intended as a navigation aid. (Jery Kergan)
